CHENNAI, OCT. 5. The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) here of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will investigate the Jayalakshmi case. The agency's headquarters today issued the orders. Later, a case was registered based on the affidavit filed by the Sivakasi woman before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, a CBI officer told The Hindu , when contacted. On October 1, a Division Bench directed the CBI Director to entrust the probe to an officer in the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police. The court said the agency would treat her affidavit, alleging illegal confinement and sexual exploitation by police officers, as a complaint and register a case. Also, it would investigate the complaint lodged by her father with the Maraneri police that her daughter had been kidnapped. The agency should file a status report on the cases before the Registrar (Judicial). Only after this, should the charge sheet be filed.
CBI to write to Govt.
While Jayalakshmi's affidavit was treated as a complaint and a first information report (FIR) registered, the agency would also write to the State Government, asking it to hand over to it the complaint preferred by her father. After receiving the case documents, the FIR would be reregistered and investigation taken up, the officer said. Ms. Jayalakshmi furnished to the Madurai Bench the names of police offficials, from the ranks of constable to superintendent, who, she allelged, exploited her sexually, harassed and threatened her. She demanded a CBI probe into the charges and prayed for a compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs. Later in a rejoinder affidavit, she listed the names of 21 officers 13 of whom acted in their official capacity, one in his personal capacity and seven in both capacities. The controversy came to light after her father sent a telegram to the Chief Justice, saying Jayalakshmi had been murdered.
