Gear up for civic polls,

BJP workers told

HYDERABAD: The BJP has asked its cadre to gear up for the coming municipal elections and agitate over the problems faced by people.

The BJP State president, N. Indrasena Reddy, told a meeting of municipal in-charges, municipal chairpersons, district presidents and district in-charges that the party should cash in on the resentment among people over the Government's failure to keep its promises."

He was said to have asked them to bring pressure on the Government on various issues like free power supply, jobs for the unemployed youth, widow pensions, continuation of contract workers, supply of drinking water and sanitation.

The State BJP decided to give a free hand to district units on the question of having alliance with the TDP in the coming municipal elections.

APSCHE panel on varsity grants

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has constituted a high-power committee to conduct a scientific study on the rationalisation of staffing pattern and other connected aspects to lay down the basis for determining block grants to universities.

A press release issued by the Secretary, V. Jayarami Reddy, said on Tuesday that the Chairman, K.C. Reddy, had constituted the four-member committee. Its members are: M. Ananda Krishnan, former VC of Anna University, Soudathi, member of UGC, Bhanoji Rao, former professor of University of Singapore, and Jandyl B.G. Tilak, senior fellow, National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, Delhi.

Delay of trains likely

HYDERABAD: Trains passing, originating and terminating at Tirupati station are likely to get delayed for two days due to taking up of signal modernisation work by the South Central Railway from October 6. The non-interlocking work is scheduled to be taken up at the station on Wednesday causing `slight' inconvenience to passengers, according to a railway press release.

Suspended for rice misuse

ADILABAD: An Assistant Executive Engineer of the Social Welfare Department, T. Pochaiah, has been suspended and a Revenue Inspector of Sirpur-T, Yadagiri, transferred after they are found guilty in a rice misappropriation case.

The case related to misappropriation of 200 quintals of SGRY rice to be used as rice component for construction of a SC hostel building at Baba Sagar village in Koutala mandal.

A detailed inquiry by the Joint Collector, V. Durga Das, revealed that of the 755 quintals of rice allotted, 200 quintals was misappropriated. The inquiry also found many irregularities and fixed the responsibility on the AEE.

Two struck dead by lightning

NIZAMABAD: Two women -- Lakshmi Bhai (30) and Narsu Bhai (40) of Baswapur in Jukkal mandal -- were struck dead by lightning when they were working in their agriculture field last evening.

According to the Bichkunda Circle-Inspector, Md. Maqbool Ahmed, the bodies were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem examination.

Student ends life

CUDDAPAH: A ninth class student of a private school in Porumamilla town, B. Srinivasulu, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide in the early hours of Tuesday. His father, B. Ramachandrudu, is a cloth merchant. The boy died while being taken to the Nellore Government hospital on the advice of a private doctor.

It is not known what forced the student, who was taking the quarterly examination, to take the extreme step.

Two women electrocuted

WARANGAL: Two women were electrocuted when they came in contact with a live wire at Dheendayal Nagar on Tuesday.

According to the police, the two women -- Vishnupriya (40) and Venkayamma (40) -- died instantaneously.

TDP leader held

ANANTAPUR: The Two Town police on Tuesday took into custody one Raghuram Chowdary, a TDP leader of Dharmavaram constituency and the husband of the TDP ZPTC member from Tadimarri, Manjula Devi, for possessing six country-made bombs.

On information that some explosives were being stored in his house at Srinagar colony, the police searched the premises and seized the bombs.

YSR's directive to officials on Vadderas' plea

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Tuesday asked officials to study the socio-economic conditions of Vadderas and assess the feasibility of treating them as Scheduled Tribes. He was responding to the demand in a memorandum submitted to him by the representatives of the Andhra Pradesh Vaddera Sangham, led by its president, Taneeru Dharmaraju, according to an official press release.

Fertilizers seized

GUNTUR: Revenue Department officials seized fertilizers worth Rs.10 lakhs from a trader at Muppalla village of Ipuru mandal in Guntur district on Tuesday as the trader did not have licence to sell it.

Man commits suicide

GUNTUR: A 27-year-old man, G. Gangadhara Reddy, committed suicide on Tuesday by consuming pesticide following his inability to repay debts at Ravvavaram konda in Nuzendla mandal in the district. Hailing from Lakkavaram village in Talluri mandal of Prakasam district, he went to Karnataka for two years to earn money there, but returned 10 days ago, the police said.

Farmer welfare panel invites suggestions

HYDERABAD: The Commission on Farmer's Welfare appointed by the State Government has invited suggestions from individuals and organisations latest by November 15.

They could be sent to the commission, office of the Commissioner and Director of Agriculture, Fateh Maidan, Hyderabad 500 001 of by e-mail to comag @apsu.ap.nic.in. The commission will look at the macro issues affecting agriculture and rural employment as well as problems of input availability, marketing, problems of rural finance and debts and issues relating to irrigation and water use, power supply and technology.

Boy killed in accident

TIRUMALA: A boy died and another person seriously injured in a freak accident today at the Tirumala APSRTC bus stand.

According to the traffic police, Muthuswamy, native of I.M. Perumalpatti village, Salem district, Tamil Nadu, along with his grandson, Pradeep (8) and other family members reached the bus stand after the darshan of the Lord, when unexpectedly a Tirupathi-bound bus coming in the opposite direction hit the boy killing him on the spot. Others ran to safety. The seriously injured Muthuswamy was rushed to Aswini Hospital and later shifted Tirupathi for further treatment.

Ex-sarpanch dies

CUDDAPAH: A former sarpanch and TDP leader, Ramapathi Reddy (65), died of heart attack in Tirupati on Tuesday. The former sarpanch of Gadikota also served as single window president of Veeraballe and as Veeraballe mandal TDP president and is survived by a daughter.

Lok Satta's new panel

TIRUPATI: Following have been unanimously elected for Lok Satta's Chittoor district body: D. Sivaramulu (president); Rajeswari Naik, S. Govindaiah and Mallikarjuna (vice-presidents); V. Balakrishna (secretary); M. Harikrishna and R.B. Reddy (joint secretaries) and Lokesh Babu (youth secretary), besides executive members. An advisory board was also been formed.

Dharna staged

NELLORE: Functionaries of the United Electricity Employees Union staged a dharna in front of the main Transco office, Nellore, on Tuesday, in support of their long-standing demands. They include, regularisation of all temporary employees, provision of provident fund and ESI facilities to them and compulsory insurance scheme for all contract workers.

Constable attacked

CUDDAPAH: A constable of Vontimitta police station, Prakasam, and a retired headmaster, Y. Krishna Reddy, were injured in a knife attack allegedly by one Y. Ramasubba Reddy in Mantapampalle village in Vontimitta mandal on Tuesday. Ramasubba Reddy and Krishna Reddy were said to have a land dispute.

YSR's assurance

NELLORE: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, promised to do the needful to DSC--2003 candidates. Dr. Reddy, who addressed a public meeting at Nellore on Monday, saw a banner about the DSC candidates' pleading for their eligibility, before he began his address. He wanted the banner removed, saying that the problem would be within a fortnight. The hitch was somewhere in Delhi, he pointed.

Tribal woman ends life

NIZAMABAD: A tribal woman, Lambada Nanuku (22), of Kattekindi tanda in Yellareddy mandal committed suicide by consuming pesticide at her residence on Tuesday afternoon.

The Sub-Inspector, Lakshminarayana, said based on a complaint filed by Nanuku's brother, Lalu, a dowry harassment case was registered against the victim's husband, Buddu, and his mother.

Farmers gherao Speaker

NIZAMABAD: About 300 farmers gheraoed the Assembly Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, at Busapur on Tuesday to apprise him of low voltage problem and insufficient supply of power.

They told him that standing crops were withering away due to lack of power supply and electric motors were getting burnt due to low voltage. The supply was not being provided for eight hours as promised by the Government, they complained.

The farmers relented when the Speaker promised them that he would take up the issue with the Transco authorities. Later, he proceeded to Sriramsagar where he unveiled a statue of B.R. Ambedkar at the bus stand centre.

Protest against health staff

ADILABAD: Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday staged a dharna in front of the office of the District Medical and Health Officer protesting against denial of dengue fever prevalence in the town by officials.

The protestors prevented the staff from entering the office for about an hour in the morning. They demanded that the DM&HO, M. Kesava Rao, be suspended.

The party general secretary, Raghavendranath Yadav, the Adilabad constituency incharge, M. Ramana Reddy, and others participated.
