HYDERABAD, OCT. 5. The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has denied the charge levelled by Telugu Desam leaders that the Government failed to extend crop loans to farmers. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, CLP secretaries -- Konda Surekha, S. Gangaram and Erasu Pratap Reddy -- said TDP leaders had no right to criticise the Congress Government on the ground that the farm sector had been totally ignored.
Kharif season
The Government extended crop loans of Rs. 6,808 crores during the kharif season. It was Rs. 2,122 crores more when compared to the loan disbursed by the previous Government last year. Similarly, agricultural term loans of Rs. 634 crores were sanctioned. This year, 5.21 lakh new farmers were provided loans and Rs. 1,707-crore loans had been rescheduled. When the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had initiated a series of measures to help the farmers in distress, the TDP, which neglected the farming community during its tenure, was shedding crocodile tears, they said.
