SRIKAKULAM, OCT. 5. Following two breaches to the Madanagopalsagar, a big tank in Nadigam mandal, leading to encirclement of Uyyalapeta village with water, nearly 400 villagers were evacuated with the help of boats and rehabilitated in the Upper Primary School in Sithanagaram.
Relief camps
Relief camps in other places like NTR colony and Sathoshnagar colony in Tekkali continued for the second day today. According to the Collector, N. Nageswara Rao, who visited all the affected areas today, nearly 50,000 acres had been inundated and the damage could be assessed only after water is receded. As many as 65 tanks of Vamsadhara system had also been damaged. Except for one, K. Jagaiah, who was washed away on Sunday, there was no human loss. Around 17 goats also died. As water from various places started receding, damage to the roads, tanks etc are coming to the fore.
50 tanks damaged
According to the officials, the Right Main canal of Vamsadhara project had suffered breaches at as many as 20 places. Similarly the Left Man canal had also suffered breaches at several places. The discharge at the Gotta Barrage is over 39,900 cusecs. More than 50 tanks, 20 of them irrigation tanks, had also suffered damage. The estimated loss is put at Rs. 1.70 crores. In all 17 transformers, 33 feeders and a number of poles belonging to Transco have also been damaged and 22 R&B roads breached. Considerable extent of land in Santhabommali area, which had borne the major brunt, is feared sand-cast. The extent could be assessed only when the water receded.
