CHITRADURGA, OCT. 5. B. Mallikarjuna Reddy, chairman of the Karnataka Regional Oil Seeds Cooperative Societies' Federation, said that the federation had evolved a plan to purchase around 15,000 tonnes of groundnut and around 10,000 tonnes of sunflower seeds in the current season. Presiding over a meeting of the federation's board of directors on Monday, Mr. Reddy said that the federation had earned profits of Rs. 1.88 crores last year. The federation has a membership of 131 oil seeds grower's cooperative societies, and a loan of Rs. 30 crores has been advanced to 48 societies through the National Dairy Development Board. He said that the federation would enter the oil market to stop the exploitation of farmers by traders. He promised to help farmers who purchased seeds and took up production of groundnut and sunflower through cooperative societies. The office of the federation, which is at Hospet, would be shifted to Chitradurga, to help farmers of Tumkur, Davanagere, and Chitradurga districts, he said. He said that the federation would use the Rs. 10 lakhs grant from the Union Agriculture Department and the Rs. 50 lakhs grant from the National Dairy Development Board to construct a seed cleaning unit, oil-packing unit, and two godowns. M. Ramanjaneya Reddy, B. Hanumanthappa, H.G. Thippanagowda, Budal Basappa, and B. Lingappa, directors of the federation, participated in the meeting.
