Sugar factory workers continue stir

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, OCT. 5. Employees of Sirguppa Sugars and Chemicals Ltd. at Desanur village in Bellary district staged a dharna for the sixth day today in front of the taluk office at Sirguppa demanding the release of their salary, bonus, and other benefits.

The management had also said that the establishment was seasonal in character, and hence, employees were not entitled to any compensation during the lay-off period.

Immediately after the company declared the lay-off, the workers approached the Deputy Labour Commissioner, Gulbarga, in March 2003 asking him to issue a recovery notice to the company.

The Deputy Labour Commissioner held that according to the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, the company could not declare a lay-off without obtaining permission from the Government.

However, even four months after the order was passed the arrears have not been cleared, Maruti B, president of the association, said in a press release.
