BANGALORE, OCT. 5. With the world-famous Mysore Dasara festivities to begin on October 20, the State Government, in what can be considered a measure to hasten the acquisition of the Mysore Palace, has appointed a commissioner for the payment of compensation to the legal representatives or heirs or transferees "entitled thereto in the manner specified in the Mysore Palace Acquisition Act, 1998." The Act was adopted during the rule of the Janata Dal Government headed by the late J.H. Patel. It is not without significance that the present Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, who hails from Mysore, is holding the same position he held in the Patel Government. Section 8 of the Act says: "For the transfer to and vesting in the State Government of the palace under Section 4 and the right, title and interest in relation to the palace, the State Government shall pay an amount of Rs. 32 crores by depositing the same with the commissioner and the said amount shall be paid to the legal representatives or heirs or transferees entitled thereto in the manner specified in it." The process of appointing the commissioner and other actions under the Act came to be delayed with the change of Government in 1999. The Congress Government that came to power then did not display much interest in the Mysore Palace takeover issue. Now, that the Janata Dal (Secular) is part of the coalition Government headed by N. Dharam Singh, with Mr. Siddaramaiah in the key position of Deputy Chief Minister, the pace of acquisition of the palace (Amba Vilas) has been hastened, it is stated.
