CHENNAI, OCT. 5. The last two days have seen a spurt in rail track accidents, with seven persons, including two youths, losing their lives in the Chennai Division on Sunday and Monday. Police said R. Prasad (18) of Teachers Colony, Nanganallur, lost one of his sandals while travelling in a suburban train between Chromepet and Sanatorium on Sunday night. He got down at the Sanatorium station to search for his footwear, when he was hit by a train from behind. He died in hospital. In the second accident, a 17-year-old boy died after he was knocked down by a signal post. Police said L. Jayaram of Pammal, riding a suburban train, was killed between Sanatorium and Chromepet stations around 5.15 p.m. when he hit a post and suffered head injuries. He was taken to the Chromepet Government Hospital where he was declared dead. Earlier in the day, an unidentified 60-year-old man, was hit by an electrical multiple unit (EMU) while trying to cross the track near the St.Thomas Mount station. Four others died while attempting to cross the track. Police said an unidentified 40-year-old man and a 65-year-old were fatally knocked down by suburban trains in the Perambur and Kadambathur stations. Padmanabhan (55) of Tirunindravur was hit by a suburban train while trying to cross the track between Pattabiram and Tirunindravur stations on Monday morning around 10 a.m. The victim died on the spot. Later in the evening, the same day, Thangaraj (45) of Bharathi Nagar, Villivakkam, was run over by a suburban train between Korattur and Villivakkam stations, police said.
