Sugar factory workers continue stir

UDUPI, OCT. 5. The dharna by the Sakkare Karmikara Sangha of Brahmavar Sugar Factory in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here entered the fifth day on Tuesday.

The protesters said that their talks with the Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, on Monday had failed. They would continue their dharna till their demands were met, the workers said.

The sangha is demanding that the Government should pay salaries to 211 workers of the factory, who had not been paid for 22 months. The Government should pay the dues of Rs. 3.5 crores to farmers for the sugarcane supplied to the factory.

The sangha alleged that the board of directors of the factory was misleading the Government regarding about the state of affairs in the factory. The funds released through the Sugar Development Fund had been misappropriated. The board should be dissolved.

The sangha has demanded a CoD probe into the losses of the factory running to Rs. 35 crores.
