Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, OCT. 5. The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) has sanctioned Rs. 25 lakhs for developing Kadri Park in Mangalore. The Chief Whip of the ruling party, Abhayachandra Jain, will lay the foundation stone for the park on Thursday. The city's only lung space, Kadri Park is deserted on weekdays. The park is likely to attract a large crowd once the toy train is flagged off. The park, under the Department of Horticulture for over 20 years now, has hardly seen any improvement. The officials concerned blame it on the paucity of funds. With funds being released for the development of the park, the department is expected to take up several projects, including installation of decorative lights, raising a lawn, planting of ornamental trees and plants, renovating the walking path, and construction of a fernery. A portion of Kadri Hills, on which the park is located, is with the Forest Department (the piece of land that hosted the deer park). The officials concerned said the department would make Kadri Hills attractive with the help of Mangalore City Corporation. K. Diwakar, area corporator and former Mayor, said the road would be repaired and had promised to take up regulation of parking of vehicles and provide water supply and streetlights. He said there was a need to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the park. At present, the area was full of pushcarts selling salads and snacks. He had requested the city police to depute policemen to regulate traffic near the park on Sundays. But since the Kadri Police Station had been shifted to a new building close to the park, the traffic would be regulated, Mr. Diwakar said. According to Kamalaksha Kundar, Health Committee Chairman of the City Corporation, many children and adults ate at roadside eateries at Kadri Hills and littered the place. The committee had directed the Health Inspectors to control this.
