Catching them young to protect tigers

By Our Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 5. The tigers' enclosure of the Zoo Park here today was the venue of a programme to create awareness among youth about the need to protect tigers.

The programme, titled ``Tiger-the World's Greatest Cat'' was organised by the Zoo Outreach Organisation of Coimbatore, the Wildlife Conservation Society of the US and Green Mercy.

The curator of the Zoo Park, B. Vijaykumar, said the population of tigers was rapidly decreasing and they would become extinct if they were not protected. The executive director of the Green Mercy, K.V. Ramana Murthy, said that three of the eight species of tigers had already become extinct and the rest may follow suit.

Each participant was given a tiger toolkit, consisting of placards, banners, tiger masks and a certificate.
