A scramble for water at a supply tanker in Railway New Colony. Photo: C.V. Subrahmanyam
VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 5. It is a classic case of water being everywhere, thanks to this week's downpour. And it is also a case of not many drops to drink... Water problem is no longer confined to city outskirts. The gap between demand and supply for domestic purposes is too yawning for comfort. The Municipal Corporation supplies water through tankers in areas where there is scarcity. The slum abutting the Railway Stadium is one such. Officials say the area does not fall in the corporation purview and hence they cannot lay pipelines. The residents had given a representation during the Rajiv Palle Bata programme. With curbs on private water supply by exploiting bores, private tankers have to procure water from the VMC with free some trips as a pre-condition. In localities where the poorer sections live, it is always a scramble for water. Since the Godavari water supply scheme is almost ready, they are desperately hoping for an end to the daily toil. With several thousand million cubic feet (TMCs) of Godavari waters still flowing into the sea, hopefully Visakhapatnam may not have to go Chennai's way - by setting up a desalination plant.
