Regulated supply

Sir, — When heavy rain lashed the city recently, Corporation taps at many points at K. Pudur supplied excessive quantum of water. Now that there has been no rain for the past three days, these taps have gone dry. The Corporation should ensure a minimum supply daily.

Internet tariff

Sir, — The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is giving tariff concession for the Interest browsing between 10.30 p.m. to 6.30 a.m. on all days, including Sundays and holidays. Whereas it offers concessions in STD tariff for calls made between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m. on weekdays and on Sundays and holidays. If this concession is extended to Internet browsing, it will help many.

Retirement benefits

Sir, — Though the Government has ordered the release of 20 per cent of the arrears of the retirement benefits for those who retired between January 1996 and March 1998, the Education Department is yet to release the amount to the aided schoolteachers. Will the Government look into this?

Garbage dumping

Sir, — Hotels dump their waste in large quantities on Vinayaga Nagar First Street. The stink emanating from the garbage, which is not cleared regularly, poses health hazards to the residents. Will the Corporation do the needful?

Unhealthy influence

Sir, — The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, while dismissing a writ petition filed by a policeman, seeking to quash the light punishment slapped on him by his superior for his misconduct, said, "The policeman should have been dismissed from service for his act. The postponement of increment is just a meagre punishment." ( The Hindu , September 25).

The police are supposed to keep public order and prevent and work out crimes, without bias.

It is sacrilegious that the policeman had hurled abuses at a Brahmin and had snatched his sacred thread.

Drama serials on television and motion pictures are full of such episodes. Producers and the Film Certificate Board are not bothered about the sentiments of people. I hope this unhealthy environment will soon change.

Traffic congestion

Sir, — Though the road from Teppakulam to the Apollo Hospital has been widened, traffic congestion is more. Hence, the platforms should be only four feet in length. The lampposts should be shifted to the platforms. If need be, the centre barricade may be removed. The statue in the Apollo Junction should be either shifted to the centre or removed.

Bad roads

Sir, — The write-up, `Clear and present danger' ( The Hindu , October 2), effectively highlights the pathetic condition of roads mercilessly mutilated for the underground drainage scheme, which is being executed without any proper planning. It seems there is little coordination between the Corporation and Chennai Metro Water Supply and the Drainage Board in implementing the project. As a result, road-users suffer a lot every day.

The officials concerned have not even put up warning boards. The fact that at least six persons have died or were grievously injured after they fell into the trenches at Virattipathu, S.S.Colony and Anuppanadi in the recent past speaks volumes about the kind of importance the officials attach to the human lives.

Contractors and officials don't seem to be accountable to anyone. It is the responsibility of the Mayor and the councillors to ensure that the work is done, as it ought to be. But, unfortunately, they also seem to be indifferent to what is going on.

If this situation continues, the people will have no other choice but to launch an agitation.

D. Samuel Lawrence,

Speed humps

Sir, — No rules, it seems, are followed while putting up speed humps. The result is that many have been laid at unwarranted places. For instance, the stretch from Nehru statue on Alagarkovil Road to Gandhi Mandapam, measuring hardly 500 metres, has 10 humps that cause hardship to road-users. Hence, the Corporation should appoint a panel of the Police department and PWD officials and representatives of NGOs to study the spots, which require speed humps and their size.
