Kalamassery: Mullappally promises `amicable end'

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, OCT. 5. The KPCC general secretary, Mullappally Ramachandran, has promised an "amicable end" to the row over resignation of the Kalamassery Municipal chairman, Jamal Manakkadan.

"The Congress party is a democratic setup and the issue will be sorted out shortly," he said here on Tuesday.

The party official, through a letter on September 4, had asked Mr. Manakkadan to quit the chairmanship within 30 days.

The order followed complaints from a section of the ruling party councillors that Mr. Manakkadan had violated an agreement on the tenure of the chairman.

Manakkadan's demand

On receiving the letter, Mr. Manakkadan had expressed his willingness to resign from the position provided his successor was chosen by a majority of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Municipal Council.

The KPCC intervened in the matter as the District Congress Committee's (DCC) efforts to persuade the Mr. Manakkadan to relinquish the position failed. Mr. Manakkadan's critics were accusing him of not listening to his party counsels and refusing to obey orders from the DCC president, K. P. Dhanapalan.

Three standing committee chairmen had quit in protest. But their resignations were not accepted by the DCC.
