State free from polio
By Our Special Correspondent
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM,
OCT. 6.
Polio has been eradicated from the State. The last case had been reported from Kondotti in Malappuram on September 29, 2000.
But the State is not totally insulated from the disease since stray cases are being reported from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. There were 225 cases of the disease in the country in 2003 and 62 cases till September this year.
Kerala too is joining the next round of the national pulse polio immunisation programme on October 10 and November 21. The target is to provide another twin dose of the vaccine to all children below the age of five. Addressing a press conference here today, the Health Minister, K. K. Ramachandran, said that over 29 lakh children in the State would be administered the vaccine.
