Biscuit bandits strike, rob three on Kurla Express

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, OCT. 6. Three people fell victim to biscuit bandits in the Madurai-bound Kurla Express today, losing 15 sovereigns of jewellery and cash of Rs. 32,500 in the process.

The three, including a final year engineering student of Regional Engineering College, Tiruchi, were admitted to the Government Hospital at Arakkonam and discharged later in the day.

Police identified the three as S. Selvakumar (23) of Usilampatti, a foodstuffs vendor in a village near Sholapur, R. Subbarayalu (26) of Dindigul district, a carpenter working in Mumbai, and Sathish Katham (23), an REC student.

The three fell unconscious after eating biscuits offered by four people who had befriended thema after entering the compartment (S-3) at Gulbarga. Police said they had earlier turned down an offer of non-vegetarian food at Cuddapah from the four.

After pocketing the jewellery and cash, the four made good their escape round 10.15 p.m. when the train slowed down for a signal near Renigunta.

Noticing the unconscious passengers, the Travelling Ticket Examiner in the compartment left a note for the Station Master at Poodi station, who in turn alerted the officers at Arakkonam.

On getting the message, railway officials at Arakkonam brought a physician to the station, and arranged for the three to be taken off the train at 1.45 a.m. and admitted to the government hospital.

Police questioned the three after they regained consciousness. It was then that the jewellery and cash were found to be missing. Selvakumar and Sathish regained consciousness round 10 a.m, with Subbarayalu coming round later. The three subsequently left for their destinations, police said. A case has been registered, which would be transferred to Cuddapah railway police.
