67 students exposed to GE's R&D

SIXTY-SEVEN recipients of the 2003-05 batch of GE Foundation scholarships in India entered the world of problem-solving to identify the areas of innovation. At a two-day "Energize to innovate" workshop conducted recently, the young scholars were exposed to GE's global research and development activities at the John F. Welch Technology Centre (JFWTC) in Bangalore.

The philanthropic wing of the General Electric Company, the GE Foundation awards scholarships covering students' tuition fees, related course expenses, room and boarding expenses to deserving merit students pursuing graduation / postgraduation courses in Engineering, Science and Management in leading educational institutes of the country. The Institute for International Education (IEE) implements the programme.

The scholarship programme has grown from 40 scholarships worth $ 150,000 in 2000 to 68 scholarships amounting to $ 356,000 in 2003. The number of institutes covered has gone up from 14 in 2000 to 22 engineering and management institutes in 2003. Over the years, 261 students have benefited from the scholarships.

THE COMMERCE Association of Mount Carmel College is all set to conduct an all-India inter-collegiate commerce fest, "Cross Currents 2004" on Friday and Saturday. The events lined up for the festival are "Bon Voyage (Product Re-launch)," "Mermedia (Ad-Venture)," "Ship Wrecked (Crisis Management)," "Perils of the Sea (Venture Capital)," "Brain Storm (Business Quiz)," "Legal Waves (Mock Court)" and "Oh Captain My Captain (Personality)."

In the product re-launch event, contestants will be given a failed product that they have to re-launch in the market. Participants will have to come up with a creative ad for their products to win the ad-venture contest.

In the "Ship Wrecked" event, the competing students would be given a crisis situation that they have to crack in the most realistic manner.
