Facing the challenge of urbanisation

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 6. Retarding the process of urbanisation is one way of facing the inevitable challenge to gain time and provide sufficient economic opportunities besides infrastructural facilities like education and health in rural areas. This was one of the suggestions that emerged at the discussions organised by the Visakhapatnam centre of the Indian Institute of Architects to mark the World Habitat Day which fell on October 4.

The deliberations focussed on the UN General Assembly's topic for the year, "Cities- Engines of rural development.'' It was estimated that half of the world's six billion population would live in cities and the developing countries would face unprecedented growth in urban population. Besides, one-fourth of the urban population was living below the poverty line. The chapter's deliberations also dealt with the plight of rural people working in cities.

Another view that emerged was that urbanisation should be accepted as a desirable phenomenon because of its potential to generate enormous economic activity. But unlike in the developed parts of the world, urbanization had suddenly dawned upon developing countries before they woke up to the realities and challenges of urban life, the charter felt. For rural poorer sections thrust into alien working conditions it was a traumatic experience, it was observed. Since they lacked the skills that a city demand, they were easily exploited and became a suppressed lot. One of the solutions was to educate rural people in varied skills like carpentry, basic electrification, pluming and tailoring.
