Airlines plan fare hike

NEW DELHI, OCT. 7. Domestic air travel is all set to become costlier from next week. All major public sector and private air carriers are considering a 10 per cent across-the-board increase in domestic air fares from October 14.

While the public sector Indian Airlines has sought permission of the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to go ahead with the proposed fare rise, the private players, Air Sahara and Jet Airways, are also working out modalities for the new increased fare structure.

Officials of the airlines said today that the move to raise fares was prompted by a steep increase in the prices of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) coupled with the weakening of the rupee.
