Medico hangs herself

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, OCT. 7. With a week for commencement of annual examination, a second year M.B.B.S. student of Gandhi Medical College, P. Hemalata (25), committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room on Thursday. Three suicide notes, purportedly written and pasted by her on the walls stated that none was responsible for her death.

The GMC girl's hostel housekeeper, Jamuna, grew suspicious in the afternoon, as Hemalata did not come to dining hall for lunch. She alerted the hostel staff and informed college authorities after Hemalata failed to respond to repeated knocks on the door.

When they broke the windowpanes and peeped in, her body was found hanging from the ceiling with a sari. A native of Visakhapatnam, Hemalata was married to Ravi, Senior Assistant, in Andhra Medical College and had two children, a son and a daughter.

Each of the three notes had one-line sentences. In the first one, she wrote `No reason for my death. I want peace of mind. In second and third notes, she penned in Telugu -`Anta swartham' (all selfishness) and `Evariki Emi Kani Hema' (Hema is not anything to anyone).

"She was last seen around 10 a.m. in the hostel. She must have died between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.", the Chilakalguda Sub-Inspector, Prasanna Kumar, said. Police had learnt that Hemalata had failed in some examination of first year and in fact should have been in third year.

Second suicide

This is the second suicide of a student in GMC girl's hostel in the last one year. A first year M.B.B.S. student, Vasundhara Devi (20), died after hanging herself on September 20, 2003. The victim was a resident of Vijayawada and slipped into depression reportedly over fear of examinations before committing suicide.
