Erode
By Our Staff Reporter
ERODE, OCT. 8. Tamil Nadu stands first in the country in the generation of non-conventional energy through windmills, said the chairman and managing director of the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Corporation, K. Allaudin on Thursday. Out of the 2,600 MW electricity generated through the windmills in India, the State generates 1,360 MW per day. This is 58 per cent of the total generation, said Mr. Allaudin after inaugurating a seminar on `use of renewable energy' for panchayat presidents. He said if non-conventional energy was used, expenditure could be minimised and also provide uninterrupted power supply. He said even the electric crematoriums may be brought under the non-conventional energy system. Mr. Allaudin said both Coimbatore and Erode districts stood first in the the production and use of non-conventional energy. He wanted the MLAs and MPs to contribute from their constituency development fund for generating renewable energy and urged the panchayat presidents to popularise the system. The Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said Erode was a pioneer in biogas production with 23,948 biogas plants in the district. He said district stood first in the State for the past several years in the installation of biogas plants. The Collector said biogas was used in two women sanitary complexes for drawing ground water and storing it in tanks. Some private educational institutions were using biogas for preparing food in their hostels. He wanted the panchayat presidents to popularise the non-conventional energy system among the rural people and install as many biogas plants as possible. Rajya Sabha member, N.R. Govindarajar, said he would grant funds for the renewable energy system.
