Chess
BRISSAGO (SWITZERLAND), OCT. 8. Peter Leko of Hungary has taken the lead, for the first time, against defending champion against Vladimir Kramnik in the Dannemann World classical chess championship. He did so in brilliantly with black pieces, in the eighth game here on Thursday. He now leads the 14-game match 4.5-3.5. He played Marshall Gambit against the Russian's Spanish Opening and worked hard on the board to score against the latter's home preparation in an exciting game. Kramnik sacrificed his queen for a rook and bishop on the 24th move, banking heavily but not very wisely on his outside passed pawn on the queen's flank. But the Hungarian responded by giving his bishop and knight and picked up a rook. Kramnik resigned shortly after, on the 32nd move.
