Somerset eyeing two captains

By P. Subramanyam

LONDON, OCT. 8. Somerset County Cricket club is in talks, according to the BBC Sport, with two international captains as it seeks a star name to launch a promotional challenge for the 2005 summer season.

A club spokesman said, "We are talking to the Indian Cricket Board about Sourav Ganguly and to the South African Cricket Board regarding Graeme Smith. It is also looking at captains of Australian State sides and South African Provincial teams."

Meanwhile, Somerset failed to persuade New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming as he has instead been appointed to lead Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club in 2005. Therefore the county is seriously thinking of Ganguly and Smith.

The Indian captain, Ganguly has already experienced English county cricket when he played for Lancashire in the year 2000. It may be recalled that he hit 183 against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup in Taunton, while South African Smith hit two double centuries in consecutive Tests against England during the 2003 tour.
