SUZUKA, OCT. 8. A typhoon scheduled to hit the Suzuka track area on Saturday has led to regular qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix to be cancelled, the sport's governing body said Friday. Qualifying will now be held prior to Sunday's race. It's the first time that Saturday qualifying has been cancelled for a Formula One meet. Typhoon Ma-on, meaning horse saddle in Cantonese, was near Japan's southern island of Okinawa on Friday evening, heading northeast and packing winds of up to 180 kph (112 mph). It is expected to dump up to 40cm of rain in central Japan Saturday morning, according to the Meteorological Agency. Suzuka is in central Japan. AP
