HYDERABAD, OCT.8 . The Department of Rheumatology in the Nizam's Institute of Medical Science (NIMS), the first in the State, should ensure that its research work and services to people spreads to other institutions, the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, said here on Friday. Inaugurating a two-day national continuing medical education programme on joint diseases "Rheumatology-2004" at the NIMS, he said research done during the last few years in the field was helping doctors to treat better joint diseases, which contributed to deformities and handicaps. He asked the department to begin a course in rheumatology for the benefit of doctors, since 7.5 lakh people in the State were suffering from joint diseases.
NIMS upgradation
The Minister expressed confidence that the NIMS would be upgraded to the status of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, as the Centre had already agreed to the proposal. He stressed that every medical institution in the State should have facilities on a par with NIMS. D. Prasada Rao, Director of NIMS, chaired the inaugural session. P. Rajagopal, Dean of NIMS, said the course in rheumatology would be started shortly following inspection by the Medical Council of India. Rohini Handa, secretary, Asia Pacific League of Associations of Rheumatology, spoke. Earlier, G. Narasimlu, Head of the Department, and organising secretary, welcomed the gathering, which included delegates from various States.
