By Our Staff Reporter
WARANGAL,
OCT. 8.
The agricultural sector in the State is facing peculiar situations due to over dose of reforms carried out in the past one decade, the chairperson, Farmers Welfare Commission, Jayati Ghosh, has observed.
She attributed suicide by farmers and the poor farm scenario to dilution of Panchayat Raj system and cooperative sector in the State.Consequent upon the policies adopted by the Governments over the years, the institutional credit had come down and the increased debt burden drove farmers to suicide. The regulation of inputs had collapsed giving way to traders to exploit farmers.
Prof. Jayati Ghosh went round the villages and later held an interactive meeting with farmers, public representatives and officials at the collectorate here today. Later, speaking to mediapersons, Prof. Jayati Ghosh said that the Commission would recommend for revival of institutional credit, strengthening of rural economy and regulation on agricultural inputs besides effective policies for water conservation.
