Ordinance sought on Food-for-work scheme

KARIMNAGAR, OCT. 8. The former Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ch, Vidyasagar Rao, has asked the Union Government to take up law and order measures along with socio-economic development works for a long-term solution to extremist violence in the north-eastern states.

The former Union Minister asked the State Government to promulgate an ordinance for strict implementation of food for work (FFW) scheme and food assurance programme in the State. "The FFW and food assurance programmes should not remain as election promises and it should be a guarantee for the labourers,'' he noted.

He also suggested the Government to incorporate penal action in the ordinance against officials and non-officials involved in the swindling of rice meant for the poor. He also requested the Government to withdraw the GO number 421 or amend it suitably to benefit farmers, agricultural labourers and artisans. He said that the Government should take appropriate measures to stop suicide by farmers.

River waters

Demanding the Government to evolve a comprehensive plan for proper utilisation of river waters, he suggested the Government to pressure the NTPC for release of its share for construction of Yellampalli project in the district. He also wanted the NTPC, Ramagundam, to provide additional power to Karimnagar as it was illegally utilising about 4 tmcft of water from the SRSP. The district BJP president, P. Sugunakar Rao, was also present.
