Tendulkar visits Puttaparthi

ANANTAPUR: Star cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar, visited Puttaparthi in the district on Friday to seek the blessings of Satya Saibaba. According to the Sri Satya Sai Central Trust sources, Tendulkar came alone by road from Bangalore early in the morning, had darshan of Satya Saibaba and spent about half-an-hour with him in the greenroom. Saibaba is said to have presented Tendulkar a gold bracelet.

Tendulkar is not playing the ongoing first cricket test between India and Australia at Bangalore due to an injury (tennis elbow). He left for Bangalore after participating in the mass bhajan at the Sai Kulwanth Hall.

Software firm's gesture

to farmers

NIZAMABAD: Deloitte, a software company of the United States having its branch in Hyderabad, has distributed seed, pesticide and fertilizer worth about Rs. 3 lakhs free of cost to 160 poor farmers of Bichkunda, Pitlam, Varni and Makloor mandals in the district. The Project Director, Velugu, K.V. Satyanarayana, and the Joint Director, Agriculture, Srinivas Rao, gave away seed bags, pesticide and fertilizer, besides 15 kg rice to each farmer at a function jointly organised by the Deloitte and Women's Organisation for Rural Development (WORD), here on Friday. The WORD volunteers identified beneficiaries with the help mandal-level officers, said Leela Prasad, secretary of the organisation. Vinoda Macha, the Deloitte representative, said the company dedicates itself to social service on October 8 every year in India, China and Hong Kong. Around 2,000 employees of the company branch in Hyderabad contributed for the purpose, she said.

Eggs to be included in mid-day meal menu

Hyderabad: The State Government has decided to include eggs in the menu for mid-day meal scheme being implemented for schoolchildren in the State. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, favoured egg for the children in preference to other items on the ground that it was nutritious and easy to manage. Dr Reddy reviewed the scheme at a meeting on Friday evening.

Government doctor held on graft charge

CUDDAPAH: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials arrested an orthopaedic surgeon, Palla Sanjeevaiah, working in the Cuddapah Government Hospital on Friday when he allegedly took a bribe of Rs. 4,000 from a labourer, Venkata Reddy, who required a second surgery on his fractured leg.

The ACB circle inspector, Y. Srinivasa Reddy, said the doctor demanded the bribe for performing surgery, according to a complaint lodged by the labourer. Venkata Reddy, who underwent surgery first by paying Rs. 5,000 to the doctor, got re-admitted to the Government Hospital on October 5, as his condition did not improve. The arrested doctor would be produced in the Special ACB Court at Nellore.

YSR opens civil-military liaison conference

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said the State Government opened a dialogue with the naxalites to give them a helping hand to enter the political mainstream. Inaugurating the Civil-Military Liaison Conference-2004 at EME Centre here on Friday, Dr. Reddy said talks were initiated to usher in an era of peace and tranquillity in the State. He requested the Army to conduct recruitment rallies in rural areas of the State apart from providing resources and support for ecological conservation, particularly in the districts of Anantapur and Chittoor, by employing Territorial Army battalions and troops for the purpose. Paramjit Singh, General Officer Commanding of Army, Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala area, said the defence institutions and sensitive Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) installations in and around the city needed constant vigil and protection by the civil police and intelligence agencies. He requested the State Government to publish gazette notifications addressing the security concerns of the institutions.

TDP activists held, country made bombs recovered

ANANTAPUR: The police seized 10 country made bombs and arrested two TDP activists in this connection at Thimmanicheruvu village of Pedda Pappur mandal in the district on Friday.

According to the DSP of Tadipatri, M. Ravi Prakash, a team led by the Pedda Pappur SI, Siva Reddy, raided the village and seized 10 country made bombs stored in an old house. The SI also arrested two TDP activists, M. Anjaneyulu and I. Laxminarayana, for concealing the bombs.

Ganja worth Rs. 20 lakhs seized

Kakinada: In the biggest ever haul of Ganja in East Godavari district, the DSP Rampachodavaram, Satyanarayana, intercepted a lorry at Donkarayi in the agency area on Friday and seized 2,000 kg of processed Ganja, stuffed in 62 gunny bags valued at over Rs. 20 lakhs. The lorry was on its way from Kalimela in Orissa to Madhya Pradesh. Five persons including the two drivers -- Khushiram Yadav and Kawar Singh Yadav -- the cleaner Raju and Geddada Gangajalam of Gokavaram and Mullaiah Ram Prasad of Bhadrachalam were arrested.

Spell of rain likely

Hyderabad: There was rain at a few places in coastal Andhra and Telangana on Friday while the weather remained dry in Rayalaseema. Nizamabad recorded a rainfall of 5 cm; Khammam, Madhira 4 cm each; Narsapur 3 cm; and Tuni 2 cm. According to the forecast for Saturday there will be light to moderate rain at a few places in coastal Andhra and isolated rainfall in Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Auto strike in Nellore

NELLORE: Auto rickshaws were off the road in Nellore town, on Friday, as a mark of protest against the reported move of the police to demarcate traffic areas from Sunday. The drivers are apprehensive that the new move would affect their earnings whereas the police assured them that it would not be so. The auto strike proved to be a boon for town buses and rickshaw pullers.

At the Gandhi statue centre, the police resorted to lathicharge, when the agitating auto drivers allegedly created traffic blockade. More than 40 vehicles were seized by the authorities.

CPI leader's plea

KURNOOL: The CPI district secretary, Bhimlingappa, has urged the authorities to take action against persons responsible for deaths caused by adulterated toddy. In a statement, Mr. Bhimlingappa said such deaths occurred at Yemmiganur, Adoni, Kurnool, Gudur and Kallur in the past. He said excise officials were allowing contractors to sell toddy where there were no toddy trees. The contractors prepared toddy with chemicals, he said.

NELLORE: The former Public Prosecutor, C. Ramakrishna, assumed charge as president of the Nellore Bar Association on Friday for the year 2004-2005. He enrolled himself as an advocate of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 1958. He worked as legal advisor to the State Bank of India and for the Electricity Department.

Felicitated

TIRUPATI: The engineer-in-chief (retd), Public Health and Engineering, M. Nagaraja Rao, the Chairman and Managing Director of the AP Northern Power Distribution Company Limited, P. Gopal Reddy, and the chief engineer (retd), Irrigation, M. Narasimha Reddy, were felicitated at a function conducted by the Madabhushi Anantasayanam Institute of Public Affairs (MAIPA) here on Wednesday.

The former Assembly speaker and MAIPA chairman, A. Eswara Reddi, lauded their role in execution of the Telugu Ganga.

P. Vidyasagar and P. Ratnamalika, drawn from the field of medicine and surgery, were also honoured by the Registrar of Sri Padmavathi Women's University, P. Muralimohan, for their service for three decades.

Lathicharge on ryots flayed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham on Friday condemned the lathicharge on farmers in Ongole, filing of cases of attempt to murder cases against some of them and handcuffing of those undergoing treatment in the Government Hospital.

Koratala Satyanarayana, senior farmers' leader, B. Tulasidas, president, and S. Malla Reddy, secretary, in a statement wanted the `false' cases be withdrawn and assistance extended to those injured in the lathicharge.

Mobile help on highway

ADILABAD: The Adilabad traffic police have said that highway mobile vehicles have been deployed for rescue of persons involved in accidents on the National Highway 7 passing through Adilabad.

These vehicles will be on the move along the 111 km of highway in the district. In a press release here on Friday, the traffic CI, M.A. Sattar, said persons in need of rescue vehicles could contact him over phone numbers 9440795009 and 08732-225444.

YSR for Maharashtra

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will address 10 public meetings in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra on Saturday as part of the Congress party's Assembly election campaign.

According to a press release releaser here today, Dr. Reddy would begin his campaign in Chandrapur district at 9 a.m. by addressing a meeting at Morwa.

He would later address meetings at Padoll, Ghugus, Nakoda, Korpana, Nandafata, Rajura, Bamni, Ballarpur and Chandrapur. Dr. Reddy had campaigned in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Farmers' plea

to Collector

ADILABAD: Farmers under the banner of the district Rythu Mitra Sangham on Friday urged the district Collector, J. Sudha Rani, to continue the services of the multi-purpose extension officers (MPEOs).

In a memorandum submitted to Ms. Rani, farmers said MPEOs provided the necessary information on modern agricultural practices and hence their services were needed.

Farmers also demanded that revolving funds to sanghams be released.

Open house

on service tax

NIZAMABAD: The Customs and Central Excise Nizamabad division organised an open house on service tax on its premises here on Friday.

Explaining the merits of the new service tax, the Assistant Commissioner, D.P.C. Ramesh Joshi, said being a taxpayer friendly scheme, it enabled service providers to have instant registration.

It provides immunity from penal provisions under voluntary declaration if the service providers who have not registered so far get registered now.

Palle bata petitions

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, has instructed officials to solve all the petitions received during the Chief Minister, Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy's `Rajiv Palle Bata' programme in the district by October 18. At a review meeting here on Friday, the Collector said the programme was organised in the district on July 18. Out of a total of 1,791 petitions received, 1,258 petitions had been solved.

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, inaugurated Andhra Bank's financial services centre on its bus station complex branch premises on Friday.

Sports meet

KARIMNAGAR: The district-level police sports meet was inaugurated here on Friday at the Police Parade Grounds by the Collector, C. Parthasarathi. The Superintendent of Police, Rajiv Ratan, the Additional SP, M. Sudarshan Reddy, and the DSP, Y. Sai Narsa Reddy, were present.
