BANGALORE, OCT. 8. First came new uniforms for postmen and now comes newer roles for them. Postmen and women will no longer be confined to the role of delivering mail to your homes; they will provide postal stationery, carry Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. pre-paid cellphone cards and even collect stamped envelopes from individuals and post these. The picking up of sealed envelopes from individuals will be initially limited to differently abled people and senior citizens, and will be expanded to all customers, K.B.H. Nayar, the Principal Chief Postmaster General (PMG), at a press conference here today. "The postman will become a resource person to keep up with the changing times and changing attitudes of people," he said. Besides, eight post offices would be modernised this year and round-the-clock Speed Post booking provided in all sorting offices in the Karnataka Circle. These were to mark the celebration of 150 years of the Indian Postal Services. There are 9,897 post offices in Karnataka, of which 1,318 are located in urban areas. Last year, the Postal Department served 94.1 crore individuals by ordinary mail, 1.97 crore by registered mail and 1.69 crore by money orders booked.
No weekly holiday
Mr. Nayar said that on an experimental basis, the postal head offices in Basavanagudi and Jayanagar and sub-offices in Malleswaram West, Koramanagal 1st Block and Brigade Road would function on all days of the week. The Vijayanagar East post office would remain open on Sundays but it would be closed on Mondays. The Western Union Money Transfer service would be available round the clock at the Bangalore General Post Office and till 8 p.m. at the postal head offices in Basavanagudi and Jayanagar, and post offices on Brigade Road and Museum Road, and in Indiranagar, Frazer Town, Koramangala 6th Block. All post offices would now accept payment of telephone bills, Mr. Nayar said. Mr. Nayar said the department would soon launch "logistics post," a service from Chennai to Bangalore, on a pilot basis. The service would offer delivery of parcels. To celebrate Philately Day on October 10, the Postal Department will organise a philately quiz and painting competition for schoolchildren on the premises of the Principal Chief PMG's office.
