Many projects to decongest roads

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, OCT. 8. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) plans to take up various infrastructure projects to facilitate smooth traffic on busy roads.

The BMP, in collaboration with the Railways, proposes to construct five railway underpasses — in Byappanahalli, Mathikere, Ganagondanahalli, R.P.C. Layout, and near Yeshwantpur railway station.

A joint team of BMP and Railway officials will inspect the areas within 15 days for implementation of the project, the BMP Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam, said here on Friday.

Addressing presspersons, he said the BMP had held a meeting with the Divisional Railway Manager here, and several joint projects had been identified to clear traffic bottlenecks in different parts of the city.

Feasibility study

The BMP, along with the Railways, proposes to build either an overpass or an underpass near the ITC factory. Mr. Jothiramalingam said a feasibility study would be conducted next week to check which would be a better option.

After the inspection of all these areas, the Divisional Railway Manager and BMP officials will meet to chalk out a course of action. The civic body plans to take up a project to build a direct road without deviations from Rajajinagar entrance to Khoday's Factory Circle. Mr. Jothiramalingam said the road would be straightened to form an eight-lane carriageway.

Road widening

He said the 1.5-km stretch from Okalipuram to the leprosarium on Mysore Road would be widened into a four-lane carriageway for facilitating smooth traffic. The BMP would acquire land from the nearby Binny Mills and Minerva Mills for the purpose.

Decision on outsourcing

The decision to outsource the maintenance of road in all wards to an external agency would be taken by November, he said.

The Commissioner said the Lingarajapuram overpass would be opened to the public by October 16. There was a delay in opening it for traffic because asphalting could not be undertaken during the rains. The Banaswadi Road underpass would be ready by December 31, he added.

Park maintenance

The BMP Commissioner said he would place a proposal before the BMP Council to hand over small parks in some areas to residents' associations for maintenance.
