Joint venture for computer hardware

KOLKATA, OCT. 9. Unitek Computers Company of China has decided to invest about Rs. 75 crores to help set up a Rs. 250 crore unit in India for manufacturing media chips, mouse, CD ROM drives, CD-DVD drives, speakers and home theatres.

S. Ghosh of the Kolkata-based Xenitis Infotech Pvt. Ltd. (eastern region's only branded computer manufacturer), said that the new facility, which would begin production by February 2005 would be a 70:30 venture with Unitek. He claimed that the output of Unitek-Xenitis would substitute imports.

The investment would be phased out over two years and would have an ultimate employment potential of 6,000. He spoke of an ambitious target of Rs. 1,000 crores by 2007. The unit would be located in the Hooghly district. The fledgling Xenitis, promoted by a group of young professionals, manufactures the AmarPC brand of computers having among its clients, the Department of Atomic Energy, India, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Indian Oil, IIT, Kharagpur, Bates India, besides many state-based companies.

Garry Lim, President, Unitek said at a press conference that they had chosen West Bengal, after a detailed survey of the availability of entrepreneurial skills in the IT sector here.
