ANANTAPUR, OCT. 9. In a novel pilot project at Anaganidoddi village near Gooty in the district, the Excise Department in association with Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB) successfully prepared jaggery with date toddy (neera). Speaking to The Hindu today, the Excise Superintendent, Ch. Gangadhar, explained that toddy tapped from about 120 date trees was cooked to prepare jaggery by adopting the traditional process of jaggery making with sugarcane juice. About 18 kgs of jaggery was prepared with 180 litres of toddy, he said. The pilot project has been taken up to find alternative employment avenues to the toddy tappers, particularly at a time when a section of them across the State have taken to agitation against GO 767, due to which they have been displaced by virtue of losing employment. Making of jaggery with date toddy was already in practice in some parts of Maharashtra. The toddy jaggery had medicinal properties and could be used in the making of ayurvedic health products, Mr. Gangadhar said. However, the market potential of the toddy jaggery was yet to be explored, he said. In all, 10 `thopes' (date groves) were selected for experimental jaggery making, Mr. Gangadhar stated. The experiment would be repeated with the toddy tapped from five more `thopes' tomorrow. There were about 2.5 lakh date and palm trees in the district, he said.

About 12 kg of jaggery was being prepared from 100 litres of toddy, he stated.
