NEW DELHI, OCT. 9. Delhi will take on Gujarat in the opening match of the 59th National football championship for the Santosh Trophy to be held here from October 14 to 31. The opening ceremony and the opening match (from 2.45 p.m) would be held at the Ambedkar Stadium, which would later be used only from the quarterfinal league onwards, the Organising Secretary, N. K. Bhatia, said on Saturday. On the opening day, Railways will meet Uttaranchal at the Chhattarsal Stadium at 1.15 p.m, and that will be followed by a match between Bihar and Chandigarh. Maharashtra will meet Jharkhand (1.15 p.m) and UP will take on Arunachal Pradesh (3.15 p.m) at the Thyagaraja Nagar Complex. Mr. Bhatia said that the defending champion Manipur would be arriving on October 12 though it had been seeded into the quarterfinal league that would start only on October 21. Last year's runner-up Goa, Kerala and Services are the other teams seeded into the quarterfinal league. Bengal, Punjab and Maharashtra, among a total of 33 teams, would be battling it out in the cluster matches. There would be eight clusters in the qualifying rounds and the top teams in each cluster will make it to the next round to join the seeded teams. The second phase will thus have 12 teams. All players registered with the DSA would be allowed free entry into the Ambedkar Stadium for the matches from the second phase league onwards.
