Row over delay in filling syndicate vacancy

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, OCT.9. Vacancy in the Syndicate of the Madurai Kamaraj University for the past four months has raised a storm at an academic council meeting held on Friday, with some of the members criticising the administration for not having conducted an election to fill it. The departure of Lawrence Arulraj, a Syndicate member, led to the vacancy.

Members sat on the floor, demanding an immediate election announcement date by P.K. Ponnuswamy, Vice-Chancellor, and sought a response from the Syndicate immediately after an adjournment motion was moved by, Prem Babu, who led other members in protest.

They said `democracy was in danger' at the university, as the vacancy in the highest body was not filled up.

C. Manoharan, leader of the Madurai Kamaraj-Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Teachers' Association, threatened to launch an agitation, if the election was not conducted soon.

Even as the members squatted before the Vice-Chancellor criticising the delay, one of the members, P.M. Ajmal Khan, assured them that a decision concerning the election would be taken at the Syndicate meeting to be held on October 16.

However, the members insisted that the election date be announced during the meeting that had been conducted on Friday. At this stage, G. Thiruvasagam, a Syndicate member, said the university constitution did not permit the announcement of an election date at the academic council meeting.

The members returned to their seats after they had been assured that a decision would be taken shortly.
