FPAI to spread awareness about safe abortions

BELLARY, OCT. 10. The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Bellary branch, is among six branches selected for the pilot project of the London-based International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) to create awareness about safe abortions.

Latest procedure

Speaking to press persons here on Saturday, Muralidhar and Anupama, said that the Manual Vaccum Aspiration (MVA) was one of the latest procedures adopted for safe abortion, administered with a syringe and cannula.

They said that the procedure could be adopted in cases up to 12 weeks of pregnancy and was better compared to the earlier surgical method of Dilation and Currettage (D and C).

The procedure avoids pain, perforation, and damage to the uterus.

Other procedures

Another procedure in vogue is the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), which involves administration of oral tablets called Mifepristone and Misoprostol in a certain protocol to cause abortion.

This method, which could be adopted up to nine weeks of pregnancy, allowed the patient to take the tablets and have the abortion in the privacy of her home.

An emergency contraception, where in tablets are taken within 72 hours after the patient has had unprotected intercourse, was also used, the doctors said.

Family planning

However, after abortion, the patients should follow temporary method of family planning by using "Copper T", oral contraceptives, or condoms.

Patients could also go in for permanent method of family planning by opting for tubectomy in the case of women and vasectomy for men, they added.

The branch manager, Kulkarni, said that the FPAI with the help from 263 women self-help groups (SHG).

The women SHGs would educate and create awareness among women about safe abortions.
