HYDERABAD, OCT. 10. The All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) today demanded special employment schemes for women while maintaining that those announced by the Centre recently would not really benefit them. Brinda Karat, AIDWA general secretary, who is here to attend the tenth State AIDWA conference, told presspersons that the Centre could go in for plantation and seed-making schemes, which could fruitfully employ women. She urged the Government to give due recognition to women, who play a major role in agricultural operations as farmers and extend all benefits to them such as bank loans and insurance cover.
Land sought for women
While pleading for allotment of land to women, she said that in the absence of such measures they were being deprived of an opportunity to avail of the benefits extended by the Government. The association would represent these demands to the State Agriculture Commission on Welfare of Farmers. Ms. Karat said that there was a possibility of enacting legislation in the next Parliament session to check domestic violence against women. AIDWA was also pressing the Government to expedite passage of the bill providing 33 per cent reservation for women in the legislatures.
Judgements faulted
She pointed out that some of recent judgments of the Andhra Pradesh and Delhi High Courts had a demoralising effect on women. The Centre should ensure that judges who lack proper understanding of women's problems are not encouraged.
