PALAKKAD, OCT. 10. The old mosque of Kodumthirappilly, near the town, was found demolished using an earthmover on Saturday night. Police pickets have been put up in the area as tension prevailed over the incident. Two years ago there was a split among the Mujahids and a new group, Kadavoor Hussain group, was formed. The demolished mosque belonged to this group. The official group constructed a new mosque near the old mosque and it was opened for prayers on Sunday. The Kodumthirappilly unit of the Kerala Naduvathul Mujahid, T.V. Mohammed, said that the old mosque was demolished as it was in a dilapidated condition and the new mosque was opened for prayer today. Meanwhile, the president of the old mosque committee, Abdul Rehman, said that legal steps would be taken against those who demolished the mosque. The North Town police said that there was no law and order problem in the area and police pickets had been deployed to maintain peace in the area.
