BANGALORE Oct. 10. Probe into BMP contracts sought

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Oct. 10. The Bangalore city unit of the BJP has demanded an inquiry into the contracts awarded by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike during the tenure of the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh. Speaking to presspersons here today, the party's city unit president, Ashwathanarayan, and its spokesman, D.S. Prakash, said that corruption in the civic body had reached a new high during the tenure of Mr. Ramesh whose term will come to an end next month. Mr. Ashwathanarayan alleged large-scale corruption in the works being awarded by the civic body. The Mayor was fond of going in for "package" contracts and they needed to be probed, he said. Mr. Prakash demanded stoppage of work on the construction of a four-storeyed parking lot off Kempe Gowda Road. A private builder who had been involved in the project and was contributing only 17 per cent of the cost of construction was now being entrusted with full control over the management of the parking space. He also had complete say in the leasing of commercial space being created in what was essentially a parking amenity.

More nursing colleges likely

BANGALORE Oct. 10. Last year, the State Government approved some 100 nursing colleges even though the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) had rejected permission to them for want of adequate infrastructure and qualified teachers. This year, 45 more colleges are reportedly being added to the list taking the total number of nursing colleges to 271 in the State. Thirty of the new colleges this year will come up in Bangalore, while Mangalore is expected to get a big share of the remaining 15, according to sources. Last year, the Government had approved 250 nursing schools, although the Karnataka Nursing Council had recommended only seven schools of the 400 applications it received, the sources said. The nursing colleges will come under the scanner next year, when paramedical admissions will be made through the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell. The University's Local Inspection Committees (LICs) had rejected the applications of these colleges to start the four-year B.Sc.
