HYDERABAD, OCT. 10. The Government has cancelled tenders for three packages of the Telugu Ganga project as contractors in category one (works above Rs. 500 crores) had quoted in excess of 5 per cent of total value of works. Announcing this at a press conference here on Sunday, the Minister for Major Irrigation, Ponnala Laxmaiah, said tenders for 11 packages were opened yesterday. Quotations for three packages were found to be in excess and hence cancelled. A fresh notification would be issued soon.
TDP charge rebutted
He said Government was not ready to accept any bid in excess of value of works. He regretted that the Opposition was raising a hue and cry and attributing motives. The TDP's allegation that the total cost of works was Rs. 4,800 crores and that Rs. 2,400 crores would have been saved if the selection were made properly was totally wrong. He clarified that the highest bids for all 11 packages put together were around Rs. 3,500 crores and the total lowest bids around Rs. 2,600 crores. He wondered how the TD leaders could arrive at those figures. Claiming that the selection process was totally transparent, he said only nine contractors were eligible to take up works under category one. Mr. Laxmaiah took exception to the allegations that the Government had issued GO 107 to benefit one particular region. He made it clear that the decision to increase the Minimum Draw Down Level (MDDL) for the Srisailam project was taken at an all-party meeting.
Funding for projects
The Minister said that ICICI Securities from Mumbai had agreed in principle to mobilise funds to the tune of Rs. 2,000 crore for construction of irrigation projects in AP. Similarly, the Indian Overseas Bank has agreed to lend Rs. 300 crores for the Sripada Rao Sagar (Yellampalli) project.
