City to host `Gurus of Contemporary Art'

BANGALORE, OCT. 10. Between October 17 and October 27, the city's Chitrakala Parishat, Venkatappa Art Gallery, Kannada Bhavan, Bal Bhavan, Windsor Sheraton and Gallerie Mantram will host a series of art exhibitions as part of the Bangalore International Art Festival 2004.

Titled "Gurus of Contemporary Art", the exhibitions will be divided as "Roerich", "Art of the Masters", "Tomorrow's Masters", "Karnatakada Mahime", "Genius of Women Artists and Amrita Shergill revisited", "Mystic Paintings (a selection of religious and spiritual art by eminent artists from India and abroad)", "Painting with Light" and "Gallery Exhibitions: All over".

Simultaneously, Chitrakala Parishat, Kannada Bhavan and Mahua Gallery will hold art camps on "Legend's Bangalore: Hussein", "Masters and Others Paint", "Significant Artists", "Kala Karnataka" and "Etched Masters".

Murals

From October 17 to October 19, an event on murals as public art will be conducted at nine locations across the city. Besides artist Arpana Caur, art teachers and students will take part in the event.

On October 19 and October 20, Kannada Bhavan and Yavanika will host seminars on art, "Kaleidoscope: Understanding Art".

The seminars will feature sessions on "Bangalore, City of Art", "Branding Contemporary Indian Art", "Art and Public Policy" and "Art Wealth".

As many as 150 persons are expected to attend the seminar on "Art Wealth", where ways to buy art as an investment, good art and maintaining good art will be discussed.

An art clinic for children and others is scheduled at the Roerich Estate and Chitrakala Parishat from October 17 to October 21.

Nearly 100 schoolchildren from different parts of the city and the State will paint at the art clinic. Experts will provide tips to the schoolchildren on how to improve their painting skills.

`Art Walkway'

The boulevard along Mahatma Gandhi Road will once again become an "Art Walkway" and "Midnight Bazaar" between October 17 and October 22.

Besides, a corner of Cubbon Park will be converted as a "World Art Bazaar and Art Corner", where budding artists and art students could exhibit and sell their works. This would be patterned on the lines of an open-air market, complete with amateur music, dance, theatre and other performances.

Each day of the Bangalore International Art Festival will feature a cultural programme of dance and music. This includes classical dances, Kannada folk dances and a unique Purana Qila festival by Seher. Cubbon Park will be the venue for these dance events.

The films of Devika Rani Roerich, M.F. Husain and Viswanathan will be screened at the Badami House and Yavanika from October 17 to October 27. An intimate theatre festival will be held at Nani Arena on October 18, October 20 and October 22.

A pottery festival will also be part of the BIAF agenda, where Angad and Gopal will demonstrate and exhibit the art of pot-making.

Other potters from Bangalore, including Hamsavardhan, and sculptor, John Devaraj, will exhibit their ware. On October 19, Kannada Bhavan will host a poetry reading session.
