Delivery of

cylinders

Sir, — I came across a strange notice in a cooking gas dealer's place that read: "A rebate of Rs. 8 will be allowed if the dealer does not provide door delivery of the cylinder." It is not a question of money. Rules do not allow consumers transporting gas cylinders.

They have to be safely transported only by authorised persons. The authorities concerned would do well to carry out surprise inspection and to ensure that these veritable "bombs" do not cause serious accidents.

Stinking stations

Sir, — Dirty platforms are a common feature in most railway stations in the country. The railway station in the Garden City is not an exception to this.

I travel regularly between Bangalore and Mysore. Platforms 6 and 7 in the city railway station particularly are stinking. It appears that farther the platform is from the entrance, the more unclean it is.

One of the reasons for this could be that toilets in the trains are used when they are parked in stations. The railways should find ways to prevent this.

PAN conundrum

Sir, — It is mandatory for every assessee to file Income Tax Returns, and the Permanent Account Number (PAN) has to be mentioned while filing the returns. In case of those who do not have the PAN, they could obtain the same by filing Form No. 49A. Now, the job of issuing PAN has been assigned to two agencies.

As per the new norms, the applicant has to sign within a small box provided in the form. If the signature jets out of the box, the forms are rejected. In the case of non-resident Indians (NRI), the officials concerned ask for proof of address of the applicant in India. If NRIs do not have an address in India, how can they obtain PAN? Even in the case of Indian residents, the authorities do not accept LIC policies as proof of address. We wish that the Income Tax Department authorities give proper guidelines to the outsourced units.

Bus pass

Sir, — The much-publicised scheme of concessional bus fare or bus pass to senior citizens announced by the S.M. Krishna Government is yet to be implemented.

It appears even the new Government has not been helpful to senior citizens so far. I urge the Government to implement the scheme without further delay.

Kalyanam,

Bangalore
