An unfortunate event

Sir, _ The turn of events at Gandhi Hospital on October 4 was disturbing and unfortunate. Both engineering students and medicos behaved in a manner quite contrary to what they are taught at their institutions. The engineering students should build values of `discipline' and `regard for public property', while the medicos must have exercised some restraint. Both owe an apology to patients, who were the ultimate victims and to the public at large for the damage caused to public property.

M. Pradeep Kumar,

Violence is

not the solution

Sir, _ Engineering students and medicos are bracketed in the cream of the erudite and called noble professionals, but viewers, listeners and readers of the black news of October 4 were astonished to learn about the happenings on the premises of Gandhi Hospital. Such acts of violence cannot solve any problem, but aggravate.

The law enforcement agency had done a balancing act by registering cases against the doctors and the engineering students for the violence. But this is not enough, the respective authorities of the engineering college and Gandhi Hospital should take severe action against the individuals responsible for it.

Media and

road safety

Sir, _ Not a day passes without road mishaps. Precious lives are being lost under the wheels of negligent drivers. Are our lives so cheap?

It is high time the media takes up a campaign to create awareness about road safety and Accident Compensation Act which envisages adequate compensation for accident victims / dependents.

`Killers' should be punished for negligence.

BSNL delaying

upgradation

Sir, _ On seeing an advertisement, I visited the Lingampally Telephone Office located in Chandanagar and paid Rs. 520 towards upgradation of my telephone No. 23040229 (sulabh plan), on September 6, 2004 and was issued a receipt (No. HTD(S)/F/AA0045682) and bill no. A869944 (for outgoing facility).

Even after one month, no action has been taken by the Telephone Department. All sections dealing with Miyapur jurisdiction have got telephones and computers to record up to date data.

Had I approached a private firm like Tata or Air Tel, I could have got a telephone facility within minutes.

Help Vasavi

depositors

Sir, _ Ninteen months passed, but there appears to be no solution for the woes of depositors of Vasavi Bank, a majority of whom constitute senior citizens, pensioners, petty traders, vegetable vendors and small farmers. The Government acted promptly to arrange relief to the depositors of Charminar Bank. Even the depositors of Prudential bank, which collapsed much later than Vasavi Bank, are being paid Rs.20,000 each. We, the gullible depositors, for no fault are facing severe financial problems. We request the State Government and the RBI to consider the plight of Vasavi depositors sympathetically and arrange to pay the amount due to the depositors.

Shift Autonagar

dumping yard

Sir, _ As a regular user of the Vijayawada Highway, I observe that the MCH vehicles carrying the garbage to the Autonagar dumping yard are causing a lot of inconvenience to other road users. The garbage is not properly covered resulting in some of the garbage falling on the road and some times on the faces of motorists. The garbage is transported in daytime, particularly during peak hours in utter disregard to the instructions to move the garbage during nights only.

The garbage dumped by these vehicles in the Autonagar dumping yard is causing a lot of inconvenience to residents of Vanasthalipuram colonies as the place has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. I request the authorities concerned to look into the matter and stop dumping the garbage in the Autonagar yard.

Introduce

direct bus

Sir, _ Considering the traffic potential and good revenue at Shivam Road and Vidyanagar Sector; the City Region of the APSRTC is operating more number of buses to Secunderabad, Dilsukhnagar, Saroornagar, Uppal, ESI and Yousufguda on Route No. 107J, 107L, 107T, 107V, 113E and 113Y respectively at a frequency of 10 to 20 minutes. Though the RTC recognised the commuters' demand, yet it has not introduced a direct bus to Mehdipatnam.

A commuter has to invariably board Route No. 113E to go to Mehdipatnam for a change over at Lakdi-ka-Pul. Which yardstick prevents the RTC in introducing a direct service on Route No. 113M/V covering Vidyanagar and RTC Crossroads on the lines of 113E/C?

S. Jaganmohan Reddy,
