TIRUNELVELI, OCT. 12. Tension prevailed at Annapooranapuram in Kuruvikulam union today, after the smell of pesticide emanated from the drinking water supplied to four villages. Sources said drinking water was being distributed to Annapooranapuram, Keezha Azhagunatchiyarpuram, Mela Azhagunatchiyarpuram and Rengasamudhram from an overhead tank, of 30,000-litre capacity, at Annapooranapuram. When the residents of Keezha Azhagunatchiyarpuram recently sank a borewell for them, the new water source could not meet the needs of the village, forcing them to depend on the Annapooranapuram tank. When the Keezha Azhagunatchiyarpuram villagers tried to draw more water from the tank, there was a friction between the two villagers. Some unidentified persons allegedly mixed pesticide with the drinking water last night. When the pump operator, Thangapandi, went to the tank this morning to regulate the supply, he sensed that pesticide had been dissolved in the water. Officials of the Revenue Department in Sankarankovil and health officials from the primary health centre at Kuruvikulam rushed to the spot and collected water samples for an analysis. The `contaminated' water was drained off, and fresh water was distributed after the officials checked it.
