Sub-inspector killed in accident
MADURAI OCT 12. A sub-inspector was killed and five others were injured in a road accident near Tirumangalam in the district last night. According to police sources, K. Kamaraj (52), of Othakadai police station and team were returning to Madurai in a van late last night when it dashed against a roadside tree. While Kamaraj died on the spot, two police constables, Dasarathan and Kannan, other occupants, Kumar, Athiraman and Lakshmanan suffered injuries. The police team, accompanied by the complainants, had gone to Peraiyur for enquiring an accused in a theft case. All the injured were admitted to different hospitals.
23 child labourers rescued
Dharmapuri Oct.12. Twentythree child labourers working in automobile and welding workshops were rescued here today. According to official sources, raids were conducted in 18 establishments. The children will be admitted to special schools.
Two students drowned
ERODE OCT.12. Two school students drowned in the Lower Bhavani Project canal this evening. According to the police, after attending a school function, Ashraf Ali and Prabakaran, studying in the K.V.K. Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Punjai Puliampatty, went to the Lower Bhavani Project canal to have a bath. They got drowned in the canal and died. The police said still they are searching for the bodies.
CPI (M) delegation to China
CHENNAI OCT.12. A five-member delegation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) led by the Central Committee member of the party, T.K. Rengarajan, would visit China at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC) from October 17 to 23. The State committee secretary of the CPI (M), N. Varadarajan, said, in a statement here, that central committee members of the party, Bijan Dhar (Tripura) and P. Karunakaran (Kerala), State secretariat member of the West Bengal unit, Deepakdas Gupta, and State secretariat member of the Punjab unit, Rachhpat Singh, were other members of the delegation. The delegation would hold talks with leader of the CPC, financial experts and others during its stay in China, he said.
e-ticketing extended
CHENNAI OCT. 12. Indian Airlines has extended the e-ticketing facility to the travel agents from October 1. According to IA sources, authorised travel agents will be allowed to make booking/payment and print net-tickets for their customers. To popularise net ticketing among the travel agents, the domestic carrier will offer one non-saleable two coupon free of carriage ticket on any IA/Alliance Air sector for every 20 flown net-tickets segments. The scheme is valid for all net-tickets issued and travel completed during October 1 to 31.
Awards for artistes
CHENNAI OCT. 12. Eighteen artistes have been chosen for various Bharat Kalachar awards and titles this year. According to a release, the awards would be presented to on December 10 when its 18th Margazhi Mahotsav is to be held. S. Janaki and Subbu Arumugam have been selected for the Gnana Kala Bharathi award, while L. Subramaniam will receive the Viswa Kala Bharathi award. Vairamuthu gets the Natya Kaladhar award while Nandini Ramani will receive Kala Seva Bharathi award. Kathadi Ramamurthy will get the Nataka Kala Bharathi award. Besides them, 12 young artistes have been selected for the Yuva Kala Bharathi award in recognition of their talent in classical music and dance, the release added.
Telecom staff demonstration
CHENNAI OCT. 12. Members of the National Federation of Telecom Employees (NFTE), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Chennai Telephones, today staged a demonstration in front of the Office of the Chief General Manager, demanding payment of bonus without delay. According to C.K. Mathivanan, circle secretary of NFTE-BSNL, the demonstrators wanted immediate action to recover the dues to the BSNL from the Reliance Telecom as it had "defrauded the BSNL by converting the international calls as local calls using technology." They also demanded payment of balance of 25 per cent bonus due for the last year along with the current year's bonus.
2 held for smuggling rice
Nagercoil Oct. 12. A highway patrol team arrested two persons on the charge of transporting 200 bags of rice to Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday without valid permit. According to sources, a highway patrol party said a lorry moving at high speed. When the lorry driver ignored its stop signal, the team gave a chase and nabbed the driver, Rajan of Tirunelveli. During interrogation, he reportedly told the police that he, along with the cleaner, Sudhaker, tried to smuggle the rice from Tirunelveli.
Grievance day
Thanjavur OCT.12 . A farmers' grievance day meeting will be held at the Collectorate here on Friday, according to a press release issued here today. The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, will hear the grievances.
Exhibition
NAGAPATTINAM OCT.12. Students should be encouraged to show their talents in science exhibitions, said the local MLA, R. Jeevanandam, here on Monday. Inaugurating a science exhibition organised by the Education Department at St. Antony's Higher Secondary School here, he appreciated the exhibits displayed by students from rural areas. The District Revenue Officer, M. Moorthy, presided. A number of dignitaries including Arokkiasamy, Chief Educational Officer, the school correspondent, Sebastian, headmaster Mariasusai, spoke.
Fishermen continue stir
NAGAPATTINAM OCT.12 . Fishermen of Nagapattinam taluk operating mechanised trawlers continued their stir and stopped fishing activity for the second day today in support of the Rameswaram fishermen. Sources said that more fishermen joined the strike today and fishermen from Pazhayar, Porayar, Vedaranyam coastal areas also extended support to the strike.

Tiruchi Oct.12. The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 81.98 feet today. The inflow was 4,421 cusecs and the discharge 15,023 cusecs.

ERODE OCT. 12 . Bhavanisagar and its surrounding areas experienced very heavy rain last night. Bhavanisagar recorded 62 mm of rainfall, Moolanure-36 mm, Perundurai-35 mm, Gobichettipalayam-26 mm, Dharapuram-23 mm, Kangeyam-12.4 mm, Sathyamangalam-10 mm, Bhavani-4.4 mm.
Fast
ERODE OCT. 12 . Opposing the fixing of wages for tailors, the members of Anna Tamilaga Tailoring Workers Association observed a one-day fast today in front the Erode Municipal Office. The district president of the association, Manickkam, led the fast.
Arrested
Dharmapuri Oct. 12 . The Dharmapuri All Women Police Station arrested one person on charges of demanding dowry here on Monday. According to the police, Nagaraj of Anna Nagar used to harass his wife Kavitha for more dowry. Following this, Kavitha lodged a complaint with the police.
