Four held in Congress leader's murder case

BHIMAVARAM: The police arrested four persons in connection with the murder of the Pradesh Congress Committee member, Kathari Prabhakar Rao, here on Tuesday. Prabhakar Rao was found murdered at his residence on October 5. The other three suspects in the case were absconding, according to the police. The motive behind the murder was a land dispute, the Narsapur Deputy Superintendent of Police, R. Sivarama Raju, told reporters.

Mr. Sivarama Raju said that the police team, on a tip-off, went to Tadepalligedum railway station and arrested Chunduri Bhaskara Venkata Narayana Murty alias Babji (42), Nandamuri Murali Nagendra Varaprasad alias Murali (36) and Nandamuri Naga Venkata Sudhakar alias Sudhakar while alighting the Konark Express coming from Visakhapatnam at 3 a.m. while Jampana Dhanaraju, who allegedly hatched the conspiracy, was arrested at his residence in the town. The four, who had confessed to their crime, would be produced before a magistrate, he said.

Case against constable

ELURU: A case under the Sections of IPC relating to destruction of property and criminal trespassing against an Eluru-based traffic constable, Komaram Nageswara Rao, was registered in the Buttayagudem police station for leading tribals to destroy the tobacco field of a non-tribal farmer at Doramamidi in West Godavari district.

The constable, a tribal himself, reportedly instigated other tribals to destroy tobacco plantations on 12 acres of land owned by one Vadlamudi Durga Rao, it is said. The constable was reported to have claimed rights over the piece of land and sought the assistance of other tribals for destruction of the plantations. However, Nageswara Rao is yet to be arrested even as 10 persons involved in the case have been taken into custody.

Poll process for Congress units to begin on Nov. 17

Hyderabad: The AICC general secretary, Oscar Fernandes, who was here to review the organisational matters, has said the election process to party units will begin on November 17. Talking to newsmen on Tuesday, he said the last date for submission of membership list to the AICC was November 15. The membership drive must be completed by October 30, he said. He expressed satisfaction over the performance of the PCC under the leadership of D. Srinivas.

He refused to comment on the replacement of the PCC president and added that elections for the position were scheduled for April 30 next. He ruled out any differences with party allies over the Telangana issue.

Meanwhile, the AICC in-charge of party affairs in AP, Digvijay Singh, will be arriving here on Wednesday.

Tribunal vacation

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal will remain closed for four days from October 18 for autumn vacation.

There will be no sittings during the vacation. However, the Registry of the Tribunal will function as usual from 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to an official release.

6 die in lorry-auto collision

NIZAMABAD: Six persons were killed and seven others injured when a lorry and an autorikshaw collided near Chittapur in the Balkonda police station limits on the National Highway-7 on Tuesday.

According to reports, the victims were travelling in the autorikshaw from Balkonda to Armoor when the accident occurred. The dead were identified as Aruna (20), G. Ramesh (24), E. Raju Bhai (55), Ganga Narsu (25), Satya Gangu (50) and Lakshmi (35). Luckily, a one-year-old boy, Rahul, escaped unhurt.

Stay on proceedings in `harassment' case

HYDERABAD: Justice C.Y. Somayajulu of the High Court on Tuesday stayed all proceedings initiated against Polisetti Hari Prasada Rao, businessman of Guntur whose daughter-in-law made severe allegations against him and his family members. Pratibha Rani, daughter-in-law of Hari Prasada Rao, complained that she was tortured at her in-laws' house and she was forced to sign on blank papers which were produced before the Lok Adalat. She complained that though she did not appear before the Lok Adalat it was claimed that she had given her consent for divorce before the Lok Adalat.

A case was registered on her complaint in the court to adjudicate cases arising under Human Rights Violations. Hari Prasada Rao filed a petition in the High court challenging the proceedings initiated on the file of the Human Rights Court. He contended that the case had not been committed by appropriate magisterial court. The Judge granted interim directions and posted the matter after Dasara vacation while staying his arrest too.

Two children die in wall collapse

Kakinada: Two children were killed and three others injured when a wall of an elementary school building collapsed at Rajavaram, a remote village in the Gangavaram police station limits on Tuesday, according to a message received at the district police headquarters.

Couple electrocuted

KURNOOL: A couple was electrocuted at Gulyam village in Halaharvi mandal of Kurnool district on Monday night.

According to reports, the mishap occurred when Hussain Saheb (62), while plugging a hole in the roof, touched a live wire. As he did not return, his wife, Peeramma, 58, went there and tried to pull her husband who was hanging on the wire. She was also electrocuted.

Ryots storm sub-station

CUDDAPAH: Farmers besieged the electrical sub-station at Vontimitta on Monday night and disconnected power supply for one hour, decrying irregular power supply to Nadimpalle, Cherlopalle, Bandarupalle and Polubuchayyapalle villages under the Rachapalle feeder in the mandal.

Rain likely

Hyderabad: There was rain at a few places in coastal Andhra on Tuesday while Telangana and Rayalaseema received isolated falls. Araku Valley reported a rainfall of 5 cm, Cumbum 4 cm and Gudur 2 cm.

Night temperature went up at a few places in Telangana and it changed a little in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.

The lowest night temperature for the 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning was reported by Anantapur and Arogyavaram at 21 degree Celsius. Light to moderate rain at a few places in coastal Andhra and isolated falls in Telangana and Rayalaseema is likely on Wednesday.

New facility at SVIMS

TIRUPATI: An advanced procedure called Electro-physiology (EP) study was introduced at the cardiology unit of SVIMS hospital here. The technique helps diagnose internal complications in patients suffering from high rate of heartbeat.

NYK camp begins today

ANANTAPUR: The Nehru Yuvak Kendra of Anantapur will conduct a national integration camp from October 13 to 19 at Rajendra Municipal High School here. The Youth Coordinator of NYK, S. Amruth Prasad, told reporters here today that 150 selected youngsters from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra besides Andhra Pradesh would take part in the camp.

Training for youth

CUDDAPAH: The District Youth Welfare Department and Oriental Insurance Company will jointly conduct a fortnight-long insurance agent training to Intermediate-qualified candidates, said the youth welfare officer, B. Maheswara Reddy, on Tuesday. Youngsters between 18 and 34 years should forward applications to his office at Masapet by October 25.

Two killed in mishap

Kurnool: Two persons died when the two-wheeler on which they were travelling hit a stationary lorry resulting in their death. The deceased were identified as Govindappa, 35 and Erriswamy, 44.

Rare surgery performed

KURNOOL: A rare surgery was performed on a patient at Viswabharathi hospital here. The panel of doctors comprising the neuro surgeon, T.V.S. Reddy, the orthopaedic surgeon, K. Venkateswarlu, and the anaesthetist, Umamaheswara Rao, performed cervical planting surgery on Jutur Yesaiah, a factory worker who was injured while unloading stones. He was paralysed because of dislocation of cervical spine. After the surgery, he was able to move the limbs.

Programme on NIFT courses

TIRUPATI: An awareness programme on the courses and counselling was conducted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Fortune Kences here on Tuesday. The NIFT coordinator, J.P. Sampath Kumar, and the technical instructor, G.M. Reddy, explained the nature of the courses and future prospects to the audience.

RI for hospital staffer

HYDERABAD: G. Venganna, former Male Nursing Orderly of Kurnool Government Hospital, was sentenced to undergo one-year rigorous imprisonment and pay Rs.500 fine, as corruption charges against him were proved. The Anti-Corruption Bureau officials arrested Venganna along with a sweeper, Shaik Hussain Peera, on April 25, 1997 on the charge of receiving Rs. 400 bribe from a patient's brother, a press release said. Peera died on April 8, 2003.

Protest against idol desecration

MADANAPALLE: People of Basinkonda village, members of its development committee and other organisations including the Arya Vysya Sangham, staged a dharna at the Chittoor bus stand and later a rasta-roko protesting against the damage done to idol of Lord Venkateswara on the hill Basinkonda and the feet of the Lord engraved on a nearby rock by some miscreants. They also demanded arrest of those responsible.

About 300 people including the BJP leaders -- D.R. Jagadesh and B. Bhaskar Gupta, councillor B. Rajasekhar and members the RSS, VHP participated.

Two-year jail for PR engineer

HYDERABAD: An Assistant Engineer of Panchayat Raj (PR), T. Papa Rao, was sentenced to undergo two-year rigorous imprisonment and pay Rs. 2,000 as fine as he was found guilty in a corruption case.

Mr. Rao was trapped by sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau on September 4, 1992 while accepting Rs. 2,000 bribe. He was working as AE of Utnoor Integrated Tribal Development Agency then, according to a press release.

75 p.c. subsidy on fodder seed

KARIMNAGAR: The district administration on Tuesday launched an ambitious programme of fodder cultivation in villages by providing 75 per cent subsidy on fodder seed.

The Collector, C. Parthasarathi, launched the programme at Vilasagar of Boinpalli mandal on Tuesday by sprinkling the fodder seed in the village tank. About 200 farmers came forward to cultivate fodder in 150 acres of village tank land.

The Joint Director, Animal Husbandry, Laxmirajam, the Sircilla RDO, Nagendra, the sarpanch, Anjaiah Goud, and others were present.

Trolley workers stage dharna

KARIMNAGAR: District unit members of the Andhra Pradesh Auto and Trolley Workers Union, affiliated to the CITU, staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate on Tuesday demanding end to harassment by RTA and police officials.

Agitationists led by the union State general secretary, A. Muthyam Rao, the CITU district president, B. Sarangapani, the CITU vice-president, L. Roop Singh, and others came in procession to the Collectorate.

They also demanded that the Government abolish the computerised driving licence system.

Rajasthani samaj charge

ADILABAD: The Rajasthani Pragati Samaj, Adilabad, has demanded that the Endowments Department constitute the Marwadi Panchayat Bhavan Trust Board to manage the affairs of Panchayat Bhavan, popularly known as `Marwadi Dharmashala.'

The samaj has also demanded transfer of the Executive Officer of Panchayat Bhavan. Addressing newsmen here on Tuesday, its president, Bajranglal Agrawal, and others charged officials with neglecting development of the dharmashala.

40 pirated VCDs seized

ADILABAD: The I Town police on Tuesday arrested a person, Kommawar Chandrakanth (26) of Tirpally and seized a CD writer and 40 pirated VCDs, worth Rs. 17,000.

Meanwhile, four habitual matka gambling organisers -- Sk. Dustun, Sk. Sattar, Sk. Rafiq and Shankar -- were arrested at a hotel and Rs. 660 in cast and matka chits were seized.

Left leader's statue unveiled

WARANGAL: A statue of veteran Communist leader, B.R. Bhagawan Das, was unveiled here on Tuesday on the occasion of his first death anniversary.

Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, MP, unveiled the statue. The Mayor, T. Rajeshwar Rao, the former Minister, Kadiam Srihari, and others attended.

Later, at a public meeting, the leaders recalled the services of Bhagawan Das. A commemorative souvenir was released on occasion.

Scribe attacked

NIZAMABAD: A miscreant attacked the reporter of a Telugu daily, Y. Rajendranath, early on Tuesday. The Sub-Inspector, T. Lakshmikanth Reddy, said the culprit attacked the scribe with a knife. Mr. Rajendranath sustained injuries on his hands.
