A jumbo gift to cement friendship

By Bindu Shajan Perappadan

NEW DELHI, OCT. 12. It was a promise that the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vapjayee had made to the President of Armenia and it is now being fulfilled by the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Keeping its promise of gifting a companion to Armenia's lone male pachyderm, India is now sending Komal, an eight-year-old female elephant from Mysore Zoo, tentatively by the end of this month.

The request for the same was made to the Indian government in 1999. And while the gift is going be a trifle late, Indian Government officials claim that it is better late than never and that the "mammoth gift" would help cement the friendly relationship with the Armenian Government.

"Komal is to be sent in a specially made crate built at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.40 lakhs and all efforts are being made to make the 1,500 kg elephant comfortable. The elephant would be crated at Mysore Zoo and transported by the road to Bangalore airport after which the Armenian Government shall provide for a cargo plane from the airport to its destination. Also, during the transportation and acclimatisation process of Komal in the Armenia zoo, four people from Mysore Zoo would accompany the elephant. A veterinarian and an elephant keeper from Armenia are expected to reach Mysore a week before the actual transit to understand the practices of elephant management and husbandry," explained the Member-Secretary of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), Brij Raj Sharma.

In an effort to keep the animal in good health, all necessary vaccinations and prophylactic measures and protocols for the health would be adopted by the veterinary officer of Mysore Zoo before the journey.

"Also, a high-level delegation from the Zoo Authority of Karnataka would be travelling to Armenia for gifting the elephant to its President in person. The animal is being sent as a goodwill gesture and India is not expecting any return gift as of now. We hope we are able to establish a good working relationship," said the CZA Scientific Officer, Bipul Chakarabarty.
