`Very few IAS officers from Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, OCT. 13. B.A. Jivijaya, MLA, on Wednesday, called upon the Kodagu Gowda community to maintain its identity and lay stress on education.

He was addressing a gathering of the community after being felicitated by the Kodagu Gowda Vidya Sangha here. Mr. Jivijaya regretted there were only a few All-India service officers from Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada. Bureaucracy played a crucial role in the administration. There was a need to encourage students to take the civil services examinations, he added. K.G. Bopaiah, MLA, who was also felicitated, requested Mr. Jivijaya to lead the coffee agitation in Kodagu to secure sops for the ailing coffee industry. He said D.V. Sadananda Gowda, MP, was doing his best to find a solution to the vexed issue.

He advised the Kodagu Gowda community to lay stress on education and encourage youth.

Bariyanda R. Joyappa, Principal of the Made Maheshwara PUC College, spoke on the importance of education among the community and said it was the only means to excel in life. He suggested to the sangha that a Kodagu Gowda language lexicon be brought.

T.S. Hemavathi, State-award winning teacher from the community, was honoured on the occasion.

The president of the Kodagu Gowda Samaja, Madikeri, Paikera Anantaram, inaugurated the function.

Mr. Bopaiah, Mr. Jivijaya and other guests, Mandrira Nanaiah and Soodana Ponnappa, felicitated students from the community who had excelled in SSLC, PUC and degree examinations and those who had earned laurels in sports.
