Khaleda sees `conspiracy'

By Haroon Habib

DHAKA, OCT. 13. The Bangladesh Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, has again alleged that an Opposition political party, obviously meaning the Awami League, was conspiring to capture power with the help of foreign countries.

"Nobody can gain power without the vote of the people who are the real source of power," she said while addressing a public meeting in western Rajshahi on Tuesday. "They (foreign powers) can play with them but cannot put them (the Opposition) into power," Ms. Zia said, without taking names.

She alleged the Opposition was resorting to the conspiracy because it had lost the trust and confidence of the people. Ms. Zia, who first made the allegation last week, also mentioned the successful completion of three years of her alliance Government, which the Opposition has dubbed as three years of frustration and misrule. She said the Government has achieved success in tackling the recent floods, strengthening the economy and improving the law and order.

`People's mandate'

Ms. Zia said, "It is frustration for them (the Opposition), but for the people, it is three years of development and progress. They feel frustrated because their games have failed".
