KANNUR, OCT. 13. The Indiapost Kannur Division will initiate steps to popularise the rural postal life insurance scheme as part of efforts to generate revenue. The Divisional Postal Superintendent, P. Ramakrishnan, said today that `gramin postal melas' would be conducted in rural areas to attract more people in rural areas to the low premium and high bonus insurance scheme. The division had set the target of achieving Rs.75 crores as sum assured during 2004-2005, he said at a press conference.
Tie-up
The division would also enter into a tie-up with Kannur University that would allow payment of all remittances to the university, including examination fees, through post offices in the Kannur and Kasaragod district, he said. The Memorandum of Understanding would be signed soon, he added. Postal savings deposits in the division recorded Rs.105 crores in 29,366 accounts, Mr. Ramakrishnan said. A special deposit scheme with nine per cent interest had been introduced for senior citizens, he said.
Computerisation
Post offices at Cherukunnu, Covva, Civil Station, Kannur RS, Cherupuzha, Sreekantapuram, Karimbam and Karivellur would be computerised soon. The Kannur head post office and Pazhayangad post office had been computerised, he said. Speed Post collection time would be extended to 4 p.m. at Taliparamba, Payyannur, Pazhayanagadi, and Cherukunnu. In Kannur head post office, Speed Post articles would be accepted till 7-30 p.m., he said adding that proposals were made for opening Speed Post counters in six more post offices - Civil Station, Kannur RS, Azhikode, Chovva, Valapattanam and Kannur city.
Ramzan package
A.P. Abdullakutty, MP, today inaugurated the delivery of Ramzan season gift package introduced by India Post in the State. Under the scheme a gift package containing nuts and dry fruits in dry vacuum-sealed and gift-wrapped trays would be delivered to any address in the country. The gift package would be charged Rs.500.
