NEW DELHI, OCT. 13. Deplorable unhygienic conditions in two of Delhi's major hospitals - Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital and Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital -- as reported in the media recently have prompted the National Human Rights Commission to take suo motu cognisance. The Commission has directed that copies of the news report be forwarded to the Secretary, Health, of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Medical Superintendents of both hospitals for their comments and report within three weeks. The news report on North Delhi's Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital stated that it was in a bad shape. Although more than 2000 patients visited the hospital everyday for treatment, yet everything from its security to hygiene was in desperate need of overhaul. Besides stray dogs, loitering in the hospital premises, dirty water tanks, leaking taps and open sewer led to overpowering foul smell, it said. Apart from security, infrastructure was a major problem at the hospital.
